Forests
offer a wide range of advantages.
|
|
One advantage
of forests is that stock is already standing,
and growing on its own every year. In Romania,
average annual growth rates are between 5 m3 /ha
and 10 m3 /ha depending of type of forest and local
conditions, but can go as high as 15 m3 in some
cases.
|
|
Forests offer several
types of return, such as annual growth of
stock, increases in market value of stock, capital
gains in the medium and long terms. Young forests
also constitute excellent tax "write-offs" for
foreign holding companies.
|
|
Increase profitability
with the vertical integration of compatible
activities such as biomass, pellet and firewood
production, a sawmill, cogeneration power plant,
etc..
|
|
Young and mid-aged
forests are viable investments thanks to their
high rate of annual growth (which is much lower in
mature forests) and their lower acquisition
cost.
|
|
Offers of young and
mid-aged forests abound, large mature forests
are now rare and expensive. Younger forests are
ideal for medium to long term
investments.

|
The different
types of Forest in Romania:
|
|
|
|
Broadleaf Forest
There are 100% broadleaf forests in
the plains and foothills of the Carpathian mountain range.
In the plains, the dominating essence usually is Oak. In the
foothills, the dominating essence can be Beech or Oak,
usually accompanied by Hornbeam, Linden, Ash, Sycomore,
etc.. Located at altitudes of 50 to 600 meters, these
forests usually have "good" to "excellent" access
conditions.
|
|
|
|
Mixed Forest
Forest with a mix of broadleaved
trees and conifer trees are usually found in the upper parts
of the foothills or in the mountains. Beech will dominate in
the lower parts and coniferous essences such as Fir and
Spruce will dominate in the higher parts. Located at
altitudes of 500 to 1200 meters, these forests usually
present more difficult access conditions than the broadleaf
forests.
|
|
|
|
Conifer Forest
Except for plantations, 100% conifer
forests in Romania are always found in the higher altitudes
of the Carpathian mountains. The dominating essence is often
Spruce, accompanied by Fir, Pine, and Larch. Fir or Pine are
sometimes the dominating essence. Located at altitudes of
1000 to 1700 meters, these forests present the most
difficult (therefore costly) access conditions (usually
compensated by higher cutting quotas).
|
|
|
|
Planted Forest
Most of the Planted Forest that
exists in Romania today was planted by the communist regime,
usually in areas in the plains where forest was scarce, in
order to create sources of firewood for the local rural
population. In almost all cases the essence planted was
Robinia (pseudoacacia), which reaches harvest age within
20-30 years (instead of the usual 80 to 110 years for other
broadleaved essences). Planted forests can be very
profitable.
